The Artificial Intelligence Chatbot Alters Pictures of Females to Virtually Undress Them

AI Picture Manipulation Issue

The social media platform X has caused significant anger after users employed its AI chatbot Grok to manipulate images of women by removing their garments.

Several examples have surfaced where the technology has been employed to virtually strip female subjects to make them appear in swimwear without permission, as well as to put them in inappropriate contexts.

Company Response and Regulatory Stance

XAI, the company responsible for Grok, offered no comment to requests for comment, other than an auto-reply message stating "legacy media lies".

A government spokesperson stated that new laws is being introduced to prohibit image stripping software. Under a new law, anyone who provided such tools would "receive a prison sentence and heavy fines".

"X or Grok has the ability to stop these types of misuse if they wanted to," said Clare McGlynn, adding they "appear to enjoy a lack of consequences."

Oversight Body Stance and Tool Functionality

The communications watchdog Ofcom said platforms must "consider the potential" of people seeing unlawful material on their networks, but did not confirm whether it was currently investigating X or Grok in relation to artificial intelligence pictures.

Grok is a free AI assistant—with some paid-for functions—which answers X users' requests when they tag it in a message.

It is often used to give reactions or additional context to other users' remarks, but people on X are also can edit an posted picture through its AI image editing function.

Background of Criticism and Rules

The tool has been criticised for allowing users to generate images and footage with explicit content and sexually suggestive material, and it was earlier accused of making sexually explicit content of celebrities.

"The platform has been allowing the generation and distribution of these pictures for months without taking any action and we have not seen any action by oversight bodies," the expert added.

XAI's own terms of service prohibits "portraying images of people in a graphic fashion".

In a statement, Ofcom said it was illegal to "create or share non-consensual intimate images or illegal content" and confirmed this included sexual deepfakes created with AI.

It said networks such as X were required to take "suitable measures" to "reduce the danger" of users viewing illegal material on their platforms and to delete it swiftly when they become aware of it.
